Do earlier series Mercedes S-class sedans have factory bulletproof glass?

NO. You are thinking to much. Quit thinking when you smell wood burning.
It’s actually two panes of glass separated by a vacuum(sound does not traverse a vacuum), hence less noise is transferred inside to the driver.
